Urban Design - Selected Projects

Chula Vista Bayfront, CA

Chula Vista Bayfront, 150 acres in Chulas Vista on south San Diego Bay, was planned as a water-front Urban Village Resort which is part of Chula Vista's urban core.  It was envisioned as a world-class destination Resort consisting of a tightly woven tapestry of hotels, shopping, entertainment, cultural, and recreational facilities, surrounding a new 10-acre lagoon, as well as adjacent residential and office.  By clustering the uses into a pedestrian-scale, 24-hour village, over 300 acres of sensitive wetlands have been preserved. The plan was not executed, due to the Kuwati War, where the Kuwati investors had to re-focus on rebuilding Kuwait.

The Kishiwada Port Redevelopment proposal is planned as the "heart" of Kishiwada City.  The location on Osaka Bay offers unique opportunities to transform an existing industrial waterfront area into a development emphasizing the relationship between work and leisure.  The tapestry of districts -  the shopping entertainment district, the office, cultural, and residential districts, are connected by a series of canals and parks.  The quiet residential districts provide for highrise as well as garden and canal-front lifestyles.  The cultural district, festival market plaza, and 1500 seat amphitheater are located along the park with views to the Marina Waterfront and are designed for major festival and celebration events.  The marina is an important boating stop in Osaka Bay and accommodates water taxis, cruise boats, ferries as well as the Historic Ship.

Kishiwada Waterfront, Japan

Universal Studios needed a dynamic promenade for people walking between the existing studio tour, cinemas and amphitheater. Carl Worthington worked with Jon Jerde to produce much more.  Universal CityWalk redefined the urban village as an intricate weave of uses and services. Part entertainment district, part urban street life, part tourist attraction, part university, part shopping street, Universal CityWalk attracts 25,000 people daily. As a result, cinema patronage has increased by 60 percent and studio tour attendance by 15 percent. And though anticipated to be a tourist destination, Universal CityWalk has become a popular hang-out for locals, who account for 67 percent of sales. Despite the highest rents in the area, CityWalk is 98 percent leased. That's hardly surprising, given its annual sales average is more than $800 per square foot nearly three times the national average at regional malls.

City Walk, Universal City, CA

Westminster Promenade, Westminster, CO

The crescent-shaped  Promenade, lined with Restaurants and Shops, wraps around a 2 Ac. terraced Lake creating a beautiful foreground for viewing the mountains to the West.  The Promenade provides excellent passive solar orientation in the winter, with trellises and tree canopies providing shade in the summer.  Westminster Promenade has since become a major destination for shopping, dining, entertainment, recreation, conference/hotel, and leisure.  The overall urban design theme is one of creating a memorable roofscape and assemblage of building forms that create a "sense of place," punctuated by a series of plazas and focal points.  The project intends to create a somewhats urban experience in a suburban setting, while re-interpreting the shopping/entertainment experience.  The intention was to design a unique "place" which has ultimately become the social "heart: of Westminster.
